HP Compaq 510 and 511 Review

Review by spike888ph of TPC community:

Finally got a different brand/model to review, not the latest laptop out there but still being sold in the market today. I am referring to the Compaq 510 and 511 business laptop. I would be doing one review for both as basically the 510 and the 511 has the same physical structure and only the spec has a slight difference.

My thoughts…

Aesthetics

HP Compaq 510 when closed.1. Appeal & Size
- The Compaq 510 and 511 share the same chassis. It is exactly identical in terms of structure. For the looks, Compaq opted to use the matte finish, reason being, matte finishes are usually used in business machines which might be the target market for these models. Built quality is pretty good even if the whole unit is made from plastic. Flexing is somewhat expected because of this but nothing to be really concerned about. Weight of 2.27kgs is pretty light for a 14 inch laptop. Screen size is ideal for both watching movies and for spreadsheets. This would be a practical unit for both business and play.

2. PORTS / doors / Cardreader

- On the right side is the Optical drive which is good but quite surprised that they didn’t even put any other port there except for the optical media.

- On the left side is where you can see most ports. VGA/DC Jack/Lan and 3 x usb2.0. I don’t know why they put all the ports on the left side and what is odd is lining up all 3 usb ports on the left which is a bad sign for those people who uses an extra usb mouse which is ideally attached on the right (for right handed inviduals like me)
- No ports located at the back which is good as accessing the back while working on something is a major pain for me and I guess for most people.

- On the front (left portion), you will find the cardreader and the mic and earphone jack which can easily be accessed.
- Bottom portion: Memory and hdd are easily user serviceable which is a good thing when you need to upgrade any of those two.
- Battery pack is nicely tucked at the back which makes heat even less in front.

3. Keyboard layout and touchpad

HP Compaq 510 and 511 keyboard and touchpad

- Not much can be said. The 510/511 has a Standard keyboard that is easy to use and has a good feel. Aesthetically though, considering competition, how I wish Compaq have used chiclet type keyboards to make these model at least at par with the design of other brands.
- Touchpad is responsive and the left and right button is easy to use. It is not the usual tactile type button but has a better feel when using it. How I wish the touchpad real estate would be a little bigger.

4. Display

- Using and LED display make the image crisp, sharp and bright. No complains with it. Contrast is also good.

Usage & Performance

1. Bootup time
(I consider this an important factor in any laptop / desktop that I use)
Windows 7 starter – Compaq 510 (1gb) - Took about 1 minute.
Windows 7 starter – Compaq 511 (2gb) – - Took about 45 sec.

we timed the bootup from the moment you press the power button till it reaches the OS and making sure that all apps are already loaded and the hdd LED is barely blinking.

2. Conversion of video – using freemake video converter to an IPOD format (I put this criterion thinking that most laptop users would somehow convert movies or songs to their ipods or MP4 players)

Compaq 510

- Convert 720p MKV to IPOD format – Took about 2 hours and 41 min
- Convert AVI to ipod format – took about 45min.

Compaq 511

- Convert 720p MKV to IPOD format – Took about 50 min! whopping speed using Cyberlinkepsresso (why I used cyberlinkespresso is because it uses the gpu in the conversion making it faster).
- Convert AVI to ipod format – took about 41min.

For the 720p file I used UP the movie which is about 4.37GB big
For the AVI conversion I used Clash of the titans.avi (480p) which is about 1.45gb

MKV files (720 and 1080p) is working flawlessly with this unit. Installed mediaplayer classic home cinema with AVC core professional codec. No glitches, no hiccups.

3. Graphics

Compaq 510 uses the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, review of which can be found here in this link

I am not a gamer so I cant really give a lot of thoughts regarding that. Just base on what I have read. This thing can play most games although probably with lower setting. Not the best gaming chip out there but with the pricepoint, this might just be the bang for the buck you guys are looking for that is good for both work and play.

Flash base games like those you see in facebook like Restaurant city and Farmville will work smoothly without lag. Just a tip: use firefox or chrome.

4. Temps
- For the Compaq 510 and 511 – Palmrest area is hovering between 30 to 33 degrees which are good cool numbers.

5. Webcam
- Webcam is superb for both models as it uses the same 2MP webcam. Clarity is very very good. The jump from 1.3MP to 2MP seems to be a nice thing.

6. Speaker and audio

The audio is good and very audible with movies. Happy with it but not exactly jumping up and down with it. I know this is not the best audio for any laptop but quality is acceptable.

7. OS compatibility – Windows XP & Windows 7 drivers are downloadable from the compaq website. The good point is that even with a current system, they were able to give XP drivers for those people who still don’t want to upgrade their OS.

8. Battery Life
- 2 hours and 40min minimum consumption with maximum load. Pretty decent numbers to me. Most likely you would be able to extend the life further if you lower down the brightness and stuff.
the Compaq 510 performed poorer in terms of battery longevity by about 30min. so the compaq 510 has about 2 hours only.

How we test the battery life?
- playing continues video till battery dies (use avi files) – power saving features disabled.
- Screen brightness = Max possible
- Audio = Max possible
- Wifi is ON
- Configured to do Max performance

Compaq 510
Pros:

- XP and windows 7 Capable!
- 2MP webcam
- Hdd is more than enough at 320gb and 7400rpm
- Has 1gb memory promo
- Recovery discs included (rarity in most laptops today)
- Price is very attractive and yes it is branded!

Cons:
- So so aesthetically. No Wow factor
- No usb port on the right side

Compaq 511
Pros:

- XP and windows 7 Capable!
- 2MP webcam
- Mid level Ati 4330 discreet graphics 256mb
- Recovery discs included (rarity in most laptops today)
- At Php 29,000 and dedicated video, this could be the bang for the buck laptop!
Cons:
- So so aesthetically. No Wow factor
- No usb port on the right side
- No bluetooth

Conclusion:

The DOS Version of the Compaq 510 seems to be a good deal as it only costs Php 25,490 but without the Bluetooth which I personally rarely used. But a BT gadget from cdrking would be a cheap alternative. A netbook today should cost about 25k as well and the performance cant be compared to these machines. The edge of the netbook though is battery life. Just reviewed the EeePC 1005P and it lasted for about 6 hours straight.
Between the Compaq 510 and 511, you might want to think whether the 4k difference in price is worth it compared to the benefit of having a discreet video. Personally I would just save the 4k and probably use the savings on make the laptop 4gb! Gamers on the other hand, would want the discreet video. Again, this is not the most powerful gaming laptop but it can surely play a lot more games compared to that with the intel video built in.

Whether it is a Compaq 510 or 511 (as long as you have the win7 starter config). You can get a recovery disc! A major plus for me as I prefer having discs than hidden partitions.
